GRAFFITI

Hi Ed, I was just wondering why the graffiti at the bottom of West Street has not been removed or painted over yet ? surely it's only a ten minute job, our lovely town is usually graffiti free and I'm amazed it's been there so long. I'd do it myself but there's probably some stupid reason why it's still there.

Dear Chesilbank – I take it you mean the picture of a badly drawn penis and the initials "CMT" it's hardly the work of Banksy is it? CMT apparently stands for "Criminally Minded Thugs" who are a local gang of juvenile delinquents, the penis graphic was added later by rival youths. I don't know why members of this gang who are known to the authorities were not made to scrub it off.

I have reported it to the WDDC Wipe-out graffiti removal project. (0815 7/1/09)

 1. I note that there are two of these delightful graphics gracing our town walls now … and in a tasteful gray … maybe we could find someone to turn them into something creative and beautiful as no-one seems keen on getting rid of them …

 2. If you nip into the tourist information and ask them… What’s the graffiti c*ck doing on the wall in West Street? They’ll tell you, “it’s a marker for a walk to Cerne Abbas called the Cerne Millennium Trail”, They also have a little map you can follow, it costs a pound, bargain.

 3. Always the same old crap isn’t it eh? We’ve criminalised young people in Bridport for so long, that they have given up trying to achieve in life and feel it necessary to Criminalise themselves! Somewhere out there there is a highly amusing rap/hip-hop track that some members of CMT have recorded (but I can’t find it on youtube…) – so there you are…creative and criminally minded. Oh and, It’s not Graffiti. It’s tagging. The former requiring talent, the latter being a territorial marker.

 4. Theres another one behind the Post Office I think. I love graffiti when its done right, theres been some good things happening down the Skate Park lately. But if they have no artistic talent they should PUT THE PAINT CAN DOWN!!

 5. OK granted that it’s no-ones place to judge the art of another but I’m pretty certain that public art is usually put to a committee, voted for, discussed, put to a public vote, discussed some more and sometimes even commissioned. This is not public art … pubic art yes … public art no. But I bet if someone went around town with a tin of paint and got rid of them they’d be arrested for defacing property…

 6. what a dusty dreary world you speak of, where creativity is sanctioned by comittees…. Graffiti, is by its nature anarchy and is not subject to these constraints, if it angers you or pleases you it has done its job. (willow h)
