Safer Neighbourhood Officers have begun to distribute speed limit labels to residents so they can be attached to rubbish bins – in a bid to reduce speeding. The Marshwood Vale Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) are trialling the idea in West Dorset following the success of the same project by their Safer Neighbourhood colleagues in Poole.
Officers from Broadstone and Merley SNT launched the scheme in the summer, following concerns about vehicles speeding on Rempstone Road.
Over the next few weeks, officers from Safer Neighbourhood Teams across Beaminster, Bridport Town, Lyme Regis, Marshwood Vale and West Bay & Bradstock will be distributing hundreds of the sticky labels to residents and areas where speeding has been highlighted as a problem.
The labels will display the respective speed limit, and details of their local Safer Neighbourhood Team. Police Constable Chris Forshaw, of the Marshwood Vale SNT, said: “We have had a number of areas highlighted through the PACT (Partners and Communities Together) and community engagement process where speeding vehicles are causing concern for local residents.
“The stickers provide a visual re-enforcement of the speed limits in these areas as rubbish and recycling bins are often sighted from the road.
“We will be continuing to carry out speed enforcement throughout our areas as part of our commitment to respond to local concerns.
“Speed limits are set along a road for a reason – keep to the speed limit or you could face prosecution.”

I like the covert techniques Dorset Bill use, hiding behind a recycling bin, surely a wheelie bin would give more covertedness and also more protection should a perp mount the pavement?

What a wonderful and marvellous idea! I intend to place a sticker saying ‘NOT SPEEDING’ on the bonnet of my car. Just in case I get caught on a photograph by one of those speed camera thingaummies.
