The Ropewalk Fair

A celebration of Bridport’s Rope and Net Industry

Plans are gathering speed for Bridport’s first rope and net fair over the weekend of 9th-11th May.  Designed primarily to highlight Bridport’s unique rope making past, it also celebrates the current netting industry. Furthermore, the event is designed to raise much needed funds for the Museum and the Literary and Scientific Institute’s redevelopment project.

Now is the chance for people to get involved in a variety of ways!

Are you part of a local organisation? On Sunday 11th May we would like to invite you to join us for a big family fair on the Millennium Green around Mountfield with lots of stalls, activities and food, all themed around rope and net. Could your group come and run a stall incorporating the theme of rope or net? You can be as creative as you like – think of your favourite fete stall and give it a rope or net twist!  Some ideas might including knot-tying, hoopla, bat the [rat] knot, how much rope in a jar, guess the weight of the net etc …….. the possibilities are endless!

Stalls for community groups are only £10 to cover administration costs, and then we ask you to split any profits 50/50 with us to support our redevelopment projects.

Also on the Sunday is a huge tug-of-war competition! Which team will win the glory of the strongest people in Bridport? Teams of 6 can enter for £10- entry forms for this and more information about the community stalls are available from Emily, Bridport Museum Curator:  curator@bridportmuseum.co.uk or 01308 458703

Do you have a shop of business in the town centre? Free bags of lovely Bridport rope and netting are available from Emily, or from the Local History Centre in Gundry Lane. Decorate your shop window from 28th April to the 13th May  to promote our event- be as creative as you like, and the winning window will win a plaque!
