Dorset County Council has submitted a planning application to extend temporary consent on Bridport's existing household recycling centre (HRC). Although it has long been the intention of the county council to replace the existing recycling facility with a new waste management centre to serve the people of Bridport, the search to find the most suitable site is ongoing.
The present household recycling centre in South Street has temporary planning permission until 31 August 2010. A planning application to extend temporary consent for a further three years, while the county council works to deliver a modern, clean and efficient HRC and waste transfer station for the area, has been submitted to the Dorset County Council planning authority.
Dorset County Council's Cabinet member for the environment Robert Gould said:
"We are keen to encourage local people to recycle their rubbish and will continue to keep them informed and involved throughout the planning application process. We are firmly committed to delivering a much needed waste management centre for Bridport and the surrounding area at the earliest opportunity.
"It is hoped planning permission for the South Street facility will be determined over the summer. However if this is not the case, we would like to reassure residents that the site will remain open until a decision on the application has been made.
"We understand the concerns of local people and in the event that temporary planning permission is not granted and the current facility has to close, we are looking at interim solutions to help minimise the disruption and inconvenience to residents in the area."

The findings of the final report, which evaluates the seven short-listed sites and takes into consideration local information and comments from residents on the pros and cons of each location, will be completed shortly.
These will be presented to the county council's Cabinet in the autumn and they will make a final decision on which site goes forward for a planning application. Public consultation will form part of any planning application and residents will have the opportunity to comment during this process.
