WHAT’S YOUR POISON?

The results of our poll to find out what is Bridports favourite tipple can be seen here with Palmers IPA coming to the top of the list. Proving either people like to moan about Palmers and drink their beer nevertheless, or that Palmers got all their employees to vote for them. Wine comes in as a cosmopolitan second place, people have heard that a glass a day is good for you and expanded that theory so that a bottle a day will obviously make you invincible. Good old Cider takes third place proving that people who drink this beverage are less likely to own a computer and take part in inane online polls.

There were some complaints…

"Why is there no option for real ale as a beverage? a choice between palmers and various chemical brews is not much of a choice."

“We’ve had enough to drink. Now let’s have too much.”

“I don’t just want the hair of the dog. I want his kidneys too. Because I think the ***** ate mine.”

  1. When I went ‘ooop toot north’ recently, I discovered they had a very good description for weak tasteless beer which in my humble opinion would fit Palmer’s IPA very well. I believe up north, (where you can buy a man’s pint) Palmer’s would probably be described as ‘Maiden’s Water’.

  2. There’s weak and strong beers.. good & bad ales everywhere Bat… I don’t suscribe to that Northern fallacy…. it’s mainly perpetrated by Manchunians…. who go on about Boddingtons as if it were a class beer. Fullers ESB, Ringwood Fortyniner, 6X, Palmers 200, Summer Lightening….. I dunno there be hundreds of MAN’s beers down ere in t’south……

  3. Hummmmm… No I must be honest Pal…. it don’t make crap beer taste any better.. Crap beer is crap beer..& will always be CRAP… There ARE a ‘few’ good Northern Beers…. but most northern beer is CRAP….esp BODDINGTONS.. Manchunian Bollx………!!

  4. …or listen to their hideous grammar. (tee hee!) Plus if it’s cheap…it’ll be vile. Picture the scene, Southern gent stolls into a pub in Knaresborough… “”””I say dear fellow! I rather fancy getting myself outside of a pint of your rather dashing ale. May I trouble you to pour a glass my good man?”””” Barman: “”””‘appen y’ar – ecky thump…(belch)…at’ll be two pound ‘n’ ten then… (fart)”””” “”””Oh…could I not perhaps give you three of the queen’s pounds? I fear that paying such a pittence for such a fine brew will cause my tastebuds to reject your excellent beverage.”””” Barman: “”””gi’over!…chuffin’ eck…all ryiiite ‘ten give us yer three pound, sit down and shurrup…”””” “”””Ah…excellent”””” (takes a sip) “”””Mmm…an interesting floral nose…and a tantilising hoppy finish”””” Barman: “”””Bloody southerners…”””” (under his breathe) (Gent sits down) “”””Do you know you live in the most beautiful area? Most outstanding. I tried to convince my Uncle Reggie that buying this land and the surrounding 1000 acre estate would be a waste of time, but I can now see his reasoning.”””” Barman: “”””Bloody southerners…”””” (louder) “”””Now look here my good man…any more of that backchat and I’ll have you and your revolting family evicted from this village before you can finish that incredibly cheap cigarette!”””” Oh how things were.

  5. Carlito, You still takin Sudafeds & Rohipnol…..?!! no no no! they don’t work well together…. try leavin them out… Keep on with the Ferret Urine (as fresh as possible…) but try increasin the dose and add one generous table spoon of Badger’s Seminal Fluid… (if you can’t get Badgers… Ferrets would suffice – but it HAS to be fresh..) Add this to the Ferret’s urine (Stirred, not shaken..) That’ll sort yer out in no time at all….. will make yer Horny as a beaver tho, be warned…..

  6. Just wanted to say I visited your town last weekend, managed to get to four pubs in all and was served a tremendous pint of Palmers in each one. Actually tried 3 different brews and they were all smashing. Never heard of Palmers before but I’ll certainly look out for it in future. This is probably the most boring comment ever to appear on these pages, apologies, I just needed to tell someone.

  7. is it bad that you are bored? (carlito) I will admit it does not affect me directly, ask your family perhaps. Now if i was to take all adjectives you use to describe me, and all the advice you have given me.. and swallow the lot…burp.. i wonder what i would turn into…? we will never know!

  8. Thanks for the tip Gull Munchin, I’ll look out that Palmers 200 next time…by the way I agree with the general drift here that beer gets better as you go South though the Cambridge area puts on a pretty good show too as I recall. One thing’s for sure a good British pint knocks all your continental bierres, birras, biers and cervezas into a cocked hat !!

  9. Palmers beer is far from perfect but it is a lot better than it was. I understand that the new head brewer has stopped using granulated sugar in the brew. Having said that Tally Ho is a cracking pint if you can afford £3.20 for one!

  10. Lots of Bridport folk love to slag off the beer, but Palmers Beers do hold there own against all that frothy Norther ale and we are lucky to still have an independant local brewery in Bridport…think about it, how many of these breweries have gone over the years?

  11. I was born within the Sailors home,Valentines shop, (last known as Bells/ Spar), St Mary’s Church, Five Bells pub quadrangle many many years ago when I was very very young. Joined the forces after school, a good pint of Courages ‘directors’ in Plymouth, a crap pint of Friary muck in Pompey, no competition from Badger brewery. Moved to the midlands, Banks’s (Wolverhampton and Dudley) beer like watered down Palmers’ cooking ale (remember that). Great pint of Marstons ‘Pedigree’ though. Palmers are going from beer brewing to housing rental, this historic thatched brewery with a working watermill (last in uk?)will be the next to go. Palmers Get a live brain in.
