New Perspectives & Scamp Theatre will perform FARM BOY at Bridport Arts Centre on 22 February 2013.
The compelling sequel to his much-loved novel War Horse, Michael Morpurgo’s Farm Boy is a moving account of the changing face of the English countryside and a beautifully crafted reminder that stories really can reach out across the generations.
Now this magical tale of the bonds linking grandfather to grandson and ultimately both to the land has been brought to life by critically-acclaimed New Perspectives Theatre Company in a delightful new family show combining drama, storytelling and original music.
Farm Boy is the only sequel that Michael Morpurgo has ever written, picking up the story of Joey and Albert from War Horse and bringing it right up to date in the company of Albert’s son, now in his late seventies, and great grandson, down visiting his grandfather on the farm that’s been in his family for over a hundred years. It’s a funny touching tale about four generations of one family, about tractors versus horses, and above all about the transformational power of stories and storytelling.
Michael Morpurgo OBE is one of the UK’s best-loved authors and storytellers, he helped to establish the post of Children’s Laureate with the poet Ted Hughes, and was the third person to hold the position, from 2003 to 2005. He has written over 120 books for which he has won numerous prizes.
Daniel Buckroyd has explained why he decided to adapt the play “It was a book that I had become aware of a number of years ago. I have children and, and I got into Michael Morpurgo by reading his books to them; and then at New Perspectives a number of years ago we did a play called The Farm, which was quite a grown up play about life on a farm and the changing nature of farming. That put me in mind of the Michael Morpurgo book that I’d also read, again about the changing nature of farming during a different era. I thought ‘that would be good, let’s do that!’. So we did.”
Farm Boy will be performed at Bridport Arts Centre during the school break on 22 February, 2.30 & 7.30pm. It is suitable for children over 7 years but is also perfect for adults who want to see a magical story brought to life with drama, storytelling and music. Tickets are available from Bridport Arts Centre box office 01308 424204/ online at www.bridport-arts.com priced £14/£12 members/ £8 under 16s and £38 for a family.
