Here we go..

Walking through the old cinema tunnel you get a real sense of nostalgia, the mosaic flooring and wooden handrail leading to the entrance, a quick twist on the brass knob and into the old Foyer of the Cinema. I was guided quite quickly to my table behind the original ticket booth, which now serves as the cash register, you can imagine the queues of people wearing mac’s and smokin’ tabs, waiting in line for the new film starring Mr Rathbone. KiaOra and Butterkist please love.

Very friendly staff made me feel quite welcome, the furniture a real mix of allsorts, I believe a chair is a chair and let the food speak up. Without fuss warm bread was delivered on a board, crusty wholesome bread and a sharp knife fit for the purpose, scrunch, scrunch, scrunch the bread gave up the fight and allowed me to smear the local butter, the warmth turning the solid gold to oil.

My order, simple. Steak and chips from the specials chalkboard. Served on plain white crocks with a mixed leaf salad and frites just like the one’s you get in France. I haven’t had steak that tasted so steaky in a long while, a dob of caramelized onions on top, I cleared the plate wiping the last of the juice with my crust, bloody lovely. Add coffee, job jobbed.

  1. “”””Ee’s Gone on”””” – That man has had a surfeit of narcotics. “”””Geddover y’eeriot”””” – Do try and keep to your side of the carraigeway. “”””There ’tis, so ’tis”””” – An agreement to a factual statement.

  2. adjustable fees?
I wanna know why when its sunny it costs about £3.50 to park in the privately (monopoly) owned car-park at Seatown, but, and this is the point,WHEN ITS RAINING, its only £1-00??? and why do Chideock residents get a season ticket, exclusively, when they can walk there anyway??? grrrrrrrrrrr

  3. Went. Loved it. But be prepared for eccentricity. My recent lunchtime visit really was a very Bridport experience: Delightfully unprofessional but nonetheless pleasant waitressing. Broad bean and pea risotto was a creamy delight, although the total absence of broad beans was a little disappointing. Didn’t faze the staff though – “”””Yeah we’ve run out””””. Various locals popping in and out for quick chat with diners was also a new one on me, but added to the feeling that given support and regular patronage this restaurant has real potential to become a unique gem in the tatty tapestry of culture that is Bridport. Forget americanised conventions of service, forget formulaic efficiency, remember this is Bridport and celebrate the fact that the Palace does the restaurant experience a little differently. If you prefer cooking to catering, get in there regularly before they get all efficient. Can we have Bridport Radio Members banquet please Gideon?
