A friend and I have both been to Burma and fell in love with the country and the warm, friendly, gentle, poor but generous hearted people. After the people and the monks took to the streets in peaceful protest last year following the vast increase in fuel and food prices, we decided to raise awareness about and funds for Burma.
We had already started to set up some events when Burma was struck by Cyclone Nargis. As we watched the utter devastation and the junta’s lack of co-operation with Aid agencies and the outside world, we decided to change our focus of attention and raise funds to support some charities which always have workers on the ground in Burma.
We are fundraising for Save the Children (Burma) and Children on the Edge (Burma)
September 13th – A stall in Bucky Doo Square to highlight our events and raise some money for the cyclone victims.
September 15th at at the Electric Palace Cinema at 8pm – A film – 'Burma's Secret War' followed by a question and answer session led by Alice Cowley a medical volunteer worker on the Thai/Burmese border who has been working with Burmese refugees.
September 18th at the United Church Hall, East Street at 7.30pm – 'Coming Together For Burma' – an evening of Meditation and Prayer with a speaker from Burma . Please bring a symbol of Peace. (More details to follow)
September 19th at Bridport Arts Centre at 7.45pm (Doors open at 7.15pm) – Charity Concert 'For The People of Burma' featuring 'The B J Band' (A variety of excellent local musicians), 'Red Dirt" (Slightly jazzy folk-rock) and 'David Ferrard' a young up and coming singer-songwriter from Edinburgh who recently released his first album 'Broken Sky' to critical acclaim. He was also responsible for producing the CD 'Not in Our Name' following the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and featuring, amongst others, Seize the Day and Roy Bailey.
We will be holding a raffle.
All profits from the above events will go to the Burma branches of 'Save the Children ' and 'Children on the Edge '
