LEGO Dinosaurs arrive at Bridport Museum!
If you have visited Bridport Museum this year already, you might have noticed a very new type of Jurassic creature has arrived… it’s not a new ammonite for the collection- but a 2 metre long LEGO plesiosaur!
The creature, which consists of approximately 12000 bricks was created as part of a Jurassic Coast Museum’s project by the company Bright Bricks, who make bespoke LEGO models. The model is based on Bridport Museum’s ‘dinosaur’s bottom’: a partial plesiosaur skeleton found several years ago at the base of Golden Cap. Although we don’t know exactly what these creatures looked like, we can make a guess that they would be coloured to make them camouflaged when under water in the Jurassic seas.
Bright Bricks have also made some smaller, unique, limited edition LEGO kits of these dinosaurs for Bridport Museum. Over the summer, a number of events will be running to give children the chance to get their hands on one of them.
Competition
From Monday 2nd June until Saturday 1st November, the Museum will be running a competition to name the big LEGO Plesiosaur. Anyone can enter- simply drop into the Museum (entry is free), put £1 in our donations box and think up a name for him (or her- we don’t know which!). All entries will be put into a hat and 10 drawn at random. These 10 will each win a kit, with staff choosing the best name from those 10 to be awarded to the dinosaur!
On Wednesday 30th July, artist Darrell Wakelam will be running our ‘Build a Brickosaur’ workshop in the Town Hall. Participants will get the chance to make a 3D backdrop for their plesiosaur, as well as a host of other dinosaur-themed craft activities.
There are two identical workshops, 10am-midday, and 2pm-4pm. Tickets are £10 which includes all materials and the kit to take home. Due to the size of the pieces in the kit, this workshop is only for children aged between 6-12 years old. All children must be accompanied by one (non-paying) adult. Places are very limited, and must be booked and paid for in advance. To find out more or make a booking, please email the Museum: office@bridportmuseum.co.uk or phone 01038 458703.
