Bridport Museum is ready to Spring in action for 2012
Bridport Museum opens for the 2012 on Saturday 31 March. The team have been as busy as ever over the winter redecorating the galleries and installing the new exhibitions. On this season are:
- Sails and Swimming: explore Bridport’s sporting history to mark the 2012 Olympics
- A Rather Jolly Jubilee: celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II
- Dress to Impress: shop for some glamorous party wear!
- Seen and Not Heard: what did children wear in the past?
- Prehistoric Toolbox: what would prehistoric man used for everyday tasks? A display of finds on loan from Dorset County Museum and the National Trust Golden Cap estate.
- How to Be a Domestic Goddess and Other Useful Things: need some help with those chores?
- Coastal Erosion along the Dorset Coast: an exhibition to celebrate the 2012 Earth Festival
All the exhibitions are free and there is something for everyone!
There is also an exciting new addition to the collection which will be on display this year. With generous help from the Friends of the National Libraries the Museum has bought a Medical Commonplace book that belonged to Dr. Roberts. It contains lots of recipes for medicines (some of them sounding rather dodgy to modern patients!) It was compiled in the 1790s when Roberts was on the verge of qualifying from a chemist to a surgeon, apothecary and physician. It contains recipes for things such as ‘anti-spasmodic powder’, ‘Doctor Comer’s Lime Water’, ’Daffy’s Elixir’ and his own ‘Analeptic Pills’.
