Artsreach Summer

The Artsreach Summer Programme has arrived!

All details are now up online at www.artsreach.co.uk The programme runs from 14 May to 26 August.

The season kicks off with shows in the north of the county in May. Cornish collective o-region comes to The Exchange in Sturminster Newton for the only Dorset performance of ‘One Darke Night’, a new five-man show celebrating the life and work of the acclaimed Cornish playwright (and keen lobster fisherman) Nick Darke. Also from Cornwall, the brilliant Bec Applebee performs her solo physical theatre show ‘Oh Mary’, the incredible life story of maritime adventurer Mary Bryant, at Gillingham School.

The ever-popular Bristol Old Vic Theatre School returns to Frampton on Friday 3 June, and this year the ensemble cast takes on an adaptation of Henry Fielding’s classic novel ‘Tom Jones’. Sheer fun and bursting with bawdy scenes, it promises to be a tasty feast from beginning to end.

Winding up the half-term week Craig Johnson aka Squashbox Theatre brings his one-man show ‘Skillywidden’ to four village halls, including Burton Bradstock in the afternoon of Friday 3 June (venue for the morning show TBC). Following Craig’s popular ‘Sea Show’ last year, ‘Skillywidden’ is a celebration of the mythology, wildlife and countryside of Cornwall, using Squashbox Theatre’s distinctive mix of puppets, songs, storytelling and cabaret, with a strong environmental message. Suitable for ages 5+.

All the way from Burundi to Evershot – Steven Sogo and his Hope Street band will be performing an exuberant live show of emotion, dance and glorious harmonies, fusing modern and traditional Burundian instruments. Steven is a virtuoso guitarist and the most promising singer to have emerged from this central African country in years. His music is pure, original blues, with songs full of pain and hope simultaneously. Catch them at Evershot on Friday 17 June.

Back in Dorset for their annual open-air summer tour, Miracle Theatre will once again perform at Melbury Osmond. This year Conan Doyle’s timeless classic undergoes the Miracle treatment. In ‘The Death of Sherlock Holmes’ our hero has a new mystery to solve – one where he is the victim. Suitable for all ages, Miracle’s shows are best enjoyed with family and friends, a picnic and a glass of wine! The remainder of Miracle’s Artsreach tour will continue throughout August, taking in Sandford Orcas, Durweston and Kimmeridge.
