Come and help shape future of Bridport open spaces
Two of Bridport’s most important green spaces will feature next week in the BBC’s Breathing Spaces initiative, a national scheme to encourage local people to engage with nature. This will be linked with another national initiative, the Big Wild Read, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge promoting children’s reading through the UK’s libraries, which this year focuses on nature and the environment.

FLOOD ADVICE
“Let them drink champagne!” Camilla tells local flood victims
Amid scenes of unprecedented chaos in flood-stricken Gloucestershire, a mass evacuation of 500,000 residents is under way after rapidly diminishing drinking water supplies became contaminated with sewage seeping from collapsed drains at Highgrove House, the Pretender to the Throne's country mansion.
HU TO STAR
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has been offered a cameo role in the next League of Gentlemen Release a film “Keeping it In the Family” due to be released in 2008. The team at the League of Gentlemen appear to have approached him for reasons of budget. Hugh, being notoriously cheap in the industry, has not only the benefit of being entirely flexible for shoot dates due to his empty calendar, but has the benefit of a pig-nosed snout, usually associated with those lacking in genetic variety.

CAPTION COMPETITION
Have you seen what they've done to the Cerne Giant? Yes a 180 foot Homer Simpson has been painted (in water soluble paint) alongside our cocky friend. A pagan spokesman says "I'm amazed they got permission to do something so ridiculous" well don't be – the landowner was given a large swedge of cash (probably wished he'd asked for more now). The pagans have been doing a rain dance to try and get it washed away, great stuff guys, this is the best weather we've had for ages. So for a prize of a glazed doughnut – Try and think of a caption for this picture, what are the big lads saying to each other?
PHEW WOT A SOAKER
Do you think the rain we are experiencing this summer (2007) is anything new? Forget it, on the 18th July 1955 in sleepy Martinstown near Dorchester, 279mm, that’s nearly 11 inches of rain falling in a single 24hr period drenching locals and holidaymakers including pop star Nik Kershaw who was 3 months old at the time. The record breaking deluge pushed normally sunny Dorset to the top of the charts and we’ve been there ever since.
ECO HOLMES
Five ecologically sound homes at Allington in Bridport have been given the Low Energy Green Light despite objections from local residents suggesting that the traffic levels in Allington were already too high, now the threat of silent electric cars mowing down our young folk is an ever present and growing danger.
We were there
Bridport Radios Guv’nor and myself (Scoop) recently attended a seminar on Eco Homes at Bridport Town Hall to see what all the fuss was about.

GUSSET GRIDLOCK
New Traffic Calming Measures are being tested in Bridport. The new C.A.R. (Cabbie Ass Restrictions) implementation is now in place.
A Department of Transport traffic calming experiment has begun this week in Bridport Town, Bigwigs and Boffins from the D.O.T. were seen putting the final implementation in place for the 6 week trial involving local mini cab drivers from firms such as Pat Scabs, Abacabs, Alchocabs and the other one.
HEALTH CENTRE BUYERS
The old Health Centre is up for development and local estate agent Mostin Didgery du Balbag is pleased to announce that a London company NHoS Enterprises has purchased the site with a view to turning it into a "Real rural resort/village with all the traditional facilities you would expect to get in such a provincial location". The development that comprises of several brasseries, delis and boutique hotels and will only pass planning if they allow for a Cath Kidston shoppe and some lo-cost compact and bijoux housing. Spokesman for NHoS Enterprises Mr R World Says "we are delighted to offer lo-cost housing, our pricing structure is so low that anyone working in an advertising agency in London W1 could probably afford two of our properties"
HERO OR PSYCHO?
Reports are pouring in from Bridport residents that mysterious small metal cylindrical objects are being found by members of the Bridport public going about their daily business. Dorset Police have identified the objects as ‘spent cartridges’ of the type typically used with a Canadian issue 7.62mm C3A1 sniper rifle (commonly known as ‘the sniper’s choice’). A police spokesperson said, “Cartridges of this description are of the type believed to be used by a local stealthy assassin known as ‘The Bat’ ”.
PIRATE PASTIES
Due to a recent spate of Cornish pasties masquerading as Dorset pasties in shops, cafés and restaurants in Bridport and the surrounds, Local Trading Standards Officers have raided several outlets and issued warnings to those vending the filthy imposters. Although the counterfeit pasties are extremely difficult to spot with a crimped crust and an egg glaze, the taste is the giveaway. Local Trading Standards Occifer said: “There is only one place to buy a real Dorset Pasty and that is Leakers on East Street, no further comment, no pictures, goodbye.”

40 MPH MORONS
Place: Beaminster Road, Time: All the bloody time! Why oh why oh why do a VAST majority of idiots cruise along the Beaminster road at the break-neck speed (I’ll break their bloody necks speed) of 35-40 Mph. The National Speed limit is 60 and this is TWO WAY TRAFFIC. What is their problem??? It’s not just OAPs either!! There is one Ford Ka in particular that, on route through Melplash (at 20MPH, may I add), will not accelerate on leaving the village and retains that speed all the way to Bridport. Surely this is ILLEGAL!???!
WEST BAY
It’s a DUMP. Excluding East Beach and the old part of the harbour, West Bay should be napalmed off the map as far as I’m concerned. Over-priced chip-butties, crabby over-priced pubs, sky-rats, grockles and mid-age-crisis-bikers. Have the whole bloody lot strung up. Remember the good ol’ days? 25 pints of Stella in the George (when you could afford it at 1.80 a pint), and off to the West Point Tavern for a few shots before staggering up to Divvies for a Sunday night rock night where only 5 people were there? Art Galleries, tea rooms, hairdressers, bric-a-brac shops, concrete view-destroying monstrosities, Chelsea tractors and an army of Notting Hill-billies. That’s what it is, and something needs to be done about it.
BESIDE THE SEASIDE
At the risk of being boring… Did you see the Independent on Sunday this last week? The Review section six page spread. "Oh we do like to be beside the seaside…..Not long ago, Britain's coastal resorts were a byword for shabbiness and neglect. Now says Oliver Bennett, they're some of the hottest destinations in the UK. Overleaf, we reveal how 12 of the best were put back on the map" Guess who is number 7 on the list. (after number 6 Weymouth!)

PIG TARTS
Val Temple from Sargeant Bun Bakery in Weymouth has come under fire from jobsworth trading standards officials this week, apparently her sugar marizipan confections contained no pork and her robin cakes contain no red breasted birds at all. …AND AGAIN…
The latest newspapers to wipwop the "Notting Hill-on-Sea" nefarious nonsense into their rags are the London Evening Standard and the Sheffield Metro, gleefully telling their towny readership to snaffle up properties in the area before house prices go through the stratosphere. So that's it kids either stay with your parents / in winter lets, or go somewhere else to live…
I hear properties in South Wales are still reasonable.
Park ‘N’ Slide
It’s official, Bridport is to Install the World’s first Park and Slide scheme to ease traffic congestion, the Slide which will operate during peak periods 9pm–10pm September to April. Running from the top of Colmers hill in the West of town and corkscrewing through Symos and Allington, over the post office, delivering shoppers to the heart of town where shopkeepers are already fighting over the location of the landing pad.

MEN ONLY
Could not one of our local supermarkets introduce a 'chap only' till ? I am fed up to the back teeth of having to stand behind some woman who is incapable of paying for her groceries BEFORE she packs them away.
Here We Go Again..
Mary Griffin from the Dorset Echo has jumped on the band wagon with an article (imaginativley entitled “Town has become ‘Notting Hill-on-Sea’“) that quotes this website heavily but does not mention its name. Our point was we didn’t like Bridport being represented as Notting-Hill-On-Sea, but now, we’re being represented as a bunch of pitchfork-wielding angry villagers.
FOOD FIGHT!
Naked Chef on Hughs Manor – That cheeky Mockney Jamie Oliver has incensed local TV celeb-chef Huge Fearnley Whittingstall by landing on Dorsets doorstep. He visited Denhay Farms and Bridfish Smokery in an attempt to curry favour with the natives. The visit was an attempt by the youthfull school dinner king to get Sainsbos produce buyers out from behind their Swedish office desks and out into the real world. Dorset was chosen as the epicurecentre of the U.K. for the buyers who had never ventured past Acton (Wess Larnden) Bridport resident Mr Bat said “As we ain’t got a Sainsbos in the area, I just don’t care.”
COUNCIL TAX BANDITS
In 1997 the council tax bill for a Band C property in Bridport was £618.00 now 10 years later the bill as doubled to £1264.37 an increase of OVER 100%
Has anyone who been in the same job for the last 10 years and had an increase in pay by 100%?
– I doubt it.
Have the services provided by our local authority improved by 100%? – I don’t think so.
