DEEP TIME: the Jurassic Journey exhibition
Ben Osborne concludes his Jurassic Journey at Durlston
with a presentation, exhibition and related workshop activities
Rural arts organisations Artsreach (in Dorset) and Villages in Action (in Devon) commissioned multi award-winning landscape and wildlife photographer Ben Osborne to record a photographic journey of the Jurassic Coast from 2009-11. Ben’s resulting body of breathtaking work has been presented both as a solo audio-visual presentation (entitled ‘Jurassic Journey’) as well as an exhibition (‘Deep Time’), which concludes its tour with a summer-long residency at Durlston Country Park’s new Fine Foundation Gallery.
EXHIBITION
With support from The Heritage Lottery the Deep Time exhibition brings together Ben’s exploration of ‘deep time’; of the extraordinary geology underpinning the landscape, how nature has invaded it, and the human story of the ways we have moulded and used the coast. Ben’s journey was not a solitary one – he travelled with three other artists: poet Matt Harvey, musician Sammy Hurden and sculptor Lal Hitchcock, whose quirky flotsam and jetsam creations also feature alongside Ben’s photographs in the exhibition. Deep Time will be exhibited at the Fine Foundation Gallery at Durlston Country Park from 23 June–27 August, open daily from 10:30am–4pm. Admission is free but donations are welcome (towards future exhibitions), and work will be for sale. As part of this residency there will be the chance to ‘meet the artist’ as Ben Osborne will give a guided exhibition talk on Wednesday 27 June, explaining how and why he created his selection of images, as well as welcoming any questions.
AUDIO-VISUAL PRESENTATION
Ben’s solo touring audio-visual presentation Jurassic Journey has toured to phenomenal success across Dorset and Devon, and more recently nationwide, sparking great interest in our World Heritage Site across the country. Ben brings two final coastal presentations of Jurassic Journey to Purbeck this summer, at Durlston Country Park on Sunday 17 June and West Lulworth Village Hall, Friday 10 August (both 7:30pm start).
WORKSHOPS
Anyone inspired by Ben’s photographs or just keen to further their photographic skills will be interested to know about two related photography workshops. Following its huge popularity last summer there will be another chance to take part in Ben’s twilight photography workshop capturing the evening light and wildlife at Durlston (Mon 18 June, 5-10pm), then in August explore the highly photogenic locations around Lulworth including the Fossil Forest in a full-day landscape photography workshop (Sat 11 August, 10am-5pm). Ben will be on hand to give guidance and offer constructive feedback to participants. Workshop groups are kept small so advance booking is essential.
Also taking place at Durlston as part of the Jurassic Journey project is a coastal singing workshop, led by local musician Sammy Hurden who was commissioned to write music especially for Ben’s Jurassic Journey show. Sammy has great experience leading and writing for choirs, and during this uplifting workshop (Sat 4 August, 10:30am – 4pm) will teach some of the songs she has written inspired by her journey along the Jurassic Coast, with a chance to sing outside by the coast – open to all abilities and ages.
If you go down to Durlston this summer, you’re sure of plenty to see and do! Join the Jurassic Journey on its final outing. For full information please see the attached PDF or visit www.artsreach.co.uk / www.jurassicjourney.co.uk
Alec Dankworth & Chris Garrick present The iFoxes
Traditional Celtic folk meets Broadway jazz in a very special summer set on the Artsreach circuit this summer…
When three leading UK jazz musicians, Andy Crowdy (guitar), Alec Dankworth (double bass) and Chris Garrick (fiddle), join the fantastic Mr Nigel Mckernaghan (maestro of the Uilleann pipes and the penny whistle) to explore traditional music from Ireland and Shetland, you know sparks will fly! Trusty foxhounds Chris, Andy & Alec will first perform as a trio visiting classic Broadway melodies and swinging jazz tunes before they enter full Celtic mode with the Fantastic Mr Fox himself joining them for the rest of this special summer set.
The iFoxes came about after a chance meeting between folk and jazz musicians at a monthly traditional pub session at the Fox & Hounds in the Chiltern Hills…
Direct from the Emerald Isle via Oxfordshire, Nigel Mckernaghan started playing Highland pipes at the age of twelve and he soon progressed to playing in competition Pipe Bands, completing his graded exams before the age of eighteen. Through the mentorship of the great Billy Browne he honed his mastery of the uilleann pipes and, after many years playing in sessions and folk clubs, including Nettlebed Folk Club, Nigel has gone on to build a formidable reputation as a leading exponent of the instrument. As well as being a maestro of the pipes, Nigel travels the globe working as assistant to the pop-artist Richard Hamilton.
Whether performing with the Budapest Cafe Orchestra, or perhaps with guitarist John Etheridge, Chris Garrick is found running around the county more than your average fox. A graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music Chris has an international reputation that stretches far beyond the borders of his beloved Dorset. Among the many stars he has appeared with are Nigel Kennedy, Dolly Parton, Dame Cleo Laine and the late great Sir John Dankworth.
British Jazz Awards winner Alec Dankworth has worked with artists as diverse as Stephane Grappelli, Abdullah Ibrahim and Van Morrison. He studied at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music before embarking on a dazzling career that embraced both sides of the Atlantic. Notable U.S. residencies included periods in New York with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and a five-year spell with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Alec’s acclaimed group ‘Spanish Accents’ continues its mission to fuse elements of flamenco & jazz music.
Andy Crowdy is a well-known and highly rated bass player on the UK jazz scene. However, it is for his equally formidable prowess on the guitar Andy is in The iFoxes employ. Andy’s incredible versatility is testified by his CV which lists the likes of Gary Potter, Acker Bilk, Diz Disley, Clark Tracey, Alan Barnes and Tina May, to name but a few. Over the last many years Andy has been working extensively for New Orleans-born singer Lillian Boutte, playing bass and guitar at festivals and workshops in Europe, America and Australia.
With a chance to see The iFoxes in both an intimate village hall setting at Broadwindsor as well as under canvas in a marquee concert in the grounds of Smedmore House in Kimmeridge, this unique line-up is definitely not to be missed!
