Braggster Benefits NCI

Billy Bragg will be appearing live at Freshwater Beach Caravan Park on Saturday 12th February 2011 in aid of National Coastwatch Institution with support from the excellent emerging talent James Lusby and his band.

Billy Bragg says:

“Over the past summer, the NCI station at Burton Bradstock has helped to ensure the safety of everyone who uses the beach and the bay. Their volunteers serve not only our community, but also the thousands of holiday makers who visit Burton Beach during the year. Chesil Beach is a very popular destination, but it also presents challenges for those unfamiliar with its shelves and tides. I hope you will join me in supporting the National Coastwatch Institution in their efforts to keep our beaches safe.”

Clive Edwards Station manager NCI Lyme Bay:

“After two years of negotiations the National Coastwatch Institution finally opened their new NCI Lyme Bay station at Burton Cliff on 31st July 2010, the first NCI station in West Dorset.

The area is very popular with holidaymakers and locals alike enjoying the beauty of the Jurassic Coast, its beaches, and the coastal waters off Chesil Beach. There is a Coastwatch station at Portland Bill and another at Exmouth, and now we have one to cover the busy Burton Beach area.

Individual stations such as the new NCI Lyme Bay look out at Burton depend entirely on locally raised funds to cover their establishment, operational and maintenance costs. At present NCI Lyme Bay’s main financial priority is on raising sufficient funds to provide a purpose-built Look-Out, fully equipped with the latest surveillance equipment including radar, at a permanent location.

About the National Coastwatch Institution

The NCI is a registered charity, relying entirely on volunteers to train as watchkeepers to act as the first line of detection of any potential incidents in waters off our coastline, and fielding them quickly and efficiently to the emergency services”.
