Zoë Gilby

Acclaimed Tyneside vocalist Zoë Gilby ventures south for Bridport debut

On Friday 20th June Zoe Gilby will be singing her unique take on jazz with Philip Clouts at the piano in the Jazz Café at Bridport Arts Centre.

Zoe Gilby is an ambitious jazz vocalist and songwriter from the North East of England who is steadily gaining a national reputation. A constantly expanding repertoire starts with her compelling original compositions and includes a wide range of more contemporary material from composers such as Pink Floyd through to Kate Bush, as well as some superb interpretations of “The Great American Songbook.”

In December 2013 Zoe’s third album “Twelve Stories” was released, a powerful collection of songs with a strong narrative, delivered with a commanding mix of musical sophistication and dramatic edge. The original material is an engaging repertoire of story telling and atmosphere. The contemporary covers are an adventurous blend and the sensitive treatment to a couple of jazz standards completes this particular “story-book”

Zoë’s late father Mike Gilby was a respected trumpeter and arranger-he passed on his passion for music and has been a huge influence in Zoe’s musical journey. She studied music for two years at Newcastle College and later attended Fionna Duncan’s Vocal Jazz Workshop in Glasgow. Her influences include Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson and Sheila Jordan to name but a few. Zoë is well deserving of the respect that she has been receiving from many jazz publications, and she has performed with some of the UK top jazz musicians, including Alan Barnes, Dave Newton and Jim Mullen.

Zoe has performed to international audiences in China, Finland and Ireland as well as continuing to tour extensively at venues and festivals across the UK.

“An exuberant singer whose lively personality comes across on every track. Sheer enjoyment throughout.”

“A wide vocal range, warm timbre and clear delivery which she uses skilfully to unveil her moods. It’s clear that she’s already found her own voice.”
