100th Anniversary of the WI

Free New Exhibition at Bridport Museum: Bridport Museum reopens this year on Saturday 28th March with a fascinating new exhibition celebrating 100 years of the good works of local Women’s Institutes:

Women’s Institute: Inspiring Women  1915 – 2015

In 1915 this country was finding it very difficult to produce enough food for a population robbed of so many of its young men. The call went out to country women to do what they could to grow more vegetables and fruit. They did this by organising themselves in local village groups. The fellowship and pride that was created was something worth keeping and so the movement survived and grew to what it is today. Its aims are the same but it also plays an important role in national matters through the annual resolutions chosen from discussions in every single W.I.

The exhibition includes crafts and memorabilia from some of local WI groups.

Curator Emily Hicks said ‘We all know just how many different community groups there are in and around Bridport, that, I am delighted to have an exhibition for this season which is put together by local people, and showcases the incredible amount of work that goes on’

Back by popular demand:

World War I exhibition on ‘The Chideock Egg Lady’

This exhibition has been curated by local writer Frances Colville, who transcribed letters from our extensive collection. This archive is known as the ‘egg letters’: written by soldiers in hospital to a Chideock lady, Chrissie Squire.  Across the county there was such a thing as the National Egg Collection. Towns like Bridport were a central point for collecting eggs that were sent to wounded soldiers in hospital. Chrissie Squire decided she would paint the eggs she was sending- with little pictures, poems and good luck messages. Some of the soldiers wrote back to her, thanking her for her kind thoughtfulness. As you can imagine, many are extremely touching. Some of the letters are on display, as well as recordings of them.
