Bake Sale

BAKE SALE in aid of THE LIVING TREE: Wednesday 16 April 2014

If you’d like a mid-week treat, delicious home-made cakes and savoury pastries will be on sale at the weekly coffee morning at Bridport United Church Hall, East Street, Bridport from 10am to noon on Wednesday 16 April.

The cake sale is hosted by Karen Jones to raise funds for The Living Tree, a self-help support group for people who have experienced cancer.

Mi-Carême Quiz & Fish and Chips Supper

The Friends of St Mary’s Church, Bridport is offering quizers an opportunity to relax their Lenten fasting.  The mid-Lent Quiz & Fish and Chips Supper is being held in Church House at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday 29th March.  Today’s Mi-Carême festivals in some areas of France have their origin in the mists of past times when the French Church forbade eggs in Lenten fasting regimes.  However the fowls kept laying eggs which would not last to the end of Lent.  Food being almost a deity in France, there had to be a solution – hence Mi-Carême carnivals and feasts.  An alternative and simpler reason could be that French appetites could not last the 40 days of Lent.

Great Dorset Seafood

Dorset’s largest seafood wholesaler is launching an innovative labelling scheme to support Dorset Wildlife Trust’s campaign for Great Dorset Seafood (GDS).  Samways Fish Merchants Limited, based in Bridport, have pledged to label all seafood supplied by fishers working a Dorset Port and approved by the campaign, demonstrating provenance and traceability to their customers.

First we have the very shy Sometimes and Forever Band, making a rare appearance in the South West as they prefer to play further away from home. Spikes songs combine life’s optimism and melancholy in a way that is beautifully disguised in the seeming simplicity of their delivery. The “Sometimes” part of the band will include
Joe Trudgeon on Double bass, Anna Golding on backing vocals and percussion and Fanny Hatstand with a lemon !

Washingpool Farm Shop in Bridport is hosting a book signing and demonstration event for Honeybuns Gluten-Free Baking on the afternoon of Wednesday 26th September.

Honeybuns Bakery, situated in Holwell near Sherborne, makes handmade, multi award winning gluten- and wheat-free cakes, some of which are also dairy-free.  Their range includes cake, brownies, flapjacks, shortbreads, cookies and a new range of savouries. All the delicious products are made on their farm in Dorset using locally and thoughtfully sourced ingredients.

This year’s Bridport Food Festival takes place from the 10th – 17th June with a full week of fun Food Events. Asker Meadows in Bridport’s town centre will come alive on Saturday 16th June with the festival’s Main Event which includes the ever popular Bridport Roundtable Beer Festival.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual campaign run by HGCA, which has been running since 2000. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the variety of breakfast foods available in the UK. As we all know, the former Chez Cuddy has spent the past few weeks being transformed, with signs in the window announcing the imminent arrival of a new Chocolatiers.· Well, on the 18.11.11, Simon Dunn Chocolatiers opened its doors and I was more than keen to venture inside to check it out.

Offering coffees, teas and hot chocolates to both take away and enjoy on the premises, alongside an array of mouthwatering goodies, Simon Dunn Chocolatiers is shaping up to be a rather brilliant addition to Bridport’s cafes and shops. Ideal with the christmas period fast approaching, they offer a wonderful choice of chocolate gifts, from shoes to champagne bottles; all made on the premises.

Spend Less – Eat Better

Transition Town Bridport launched a new campaign this week to encourage Bridport shoppers to buy local food. The initiative follows a survey of prices and quality of vegetables and fruit available within walking distance of Buckydoo Square.

The survey group visited three small retailers, Fruits of the earth, Bridget’s Market and Nina’s, and three market stalls which sell vegetables on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and compared the produce with what is available from five supermarkets in town.

Palmers Waterloo

A BOTTLED beer brewed in Dorset for the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has won a top accolade from The Labologists Society.

Palmers Waterloo was awarded first place in the commemorative label category by society chairman and secretary Dale Adams.

The label on the 500ml bottle features the well-known painting by Lady Butler, titled Scotland Forever, depicting the charge of the Royal Scots Greys at the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon witnessed the devastation wrought by the Scots Greys and described them as ‘les terribles chevaux gris’ (those terrible grey horses). The charge has since been described as the greatest thunderbolt ever launched by British cavalry.

Charmouth Lunch Club

A Bridport ‘meals on wheels’ service is adding yet another lunch club to its long list of customers in the South West. A new lunch club for older people is starting in the communal room at Bridge Road sheltered accommodation, Charmouth, on Tuesday 20 September, for which Local Food Links will provide delicious meals.

Working alongside Magna Housing Association, Local Food Links will provide residents at Bridge Road and local older people with fresh, tasty traditional dishes, all made from local seasonal ingredients.
