FIRST FINAL FOR BRIDPORT YOUTH UNDER 10s
Bridport Youth under 10s became the first Bridport team for several years to reach a Final in the Dorset County Cup competition.
The Under 10s won a penalty shoot-out 4-3 after a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Of the fixtures that survived the weather – Bridport’s Youth teams had a successful weekend.
Bridports Under 14s booked a place in the Semi Final of the Dorset Cup with a 3-1 away Victory at Corfe Mullen.
West Dorset Fencing Club held their third annual Club Championships last Thursday at The Sir John Colfox School, and the progression from last year’s competition was very noticeable.
The Juniors fenced first, with twelve boys and girls under 13 battling it out with huge enthusiasm. After thirty fights had been completed the winner was Aldo d’Arrigo, 12, who showed tremendous determination and boundless energy throughout. Second place went to 11 yr. old Sam Norton and third to Ellie Baldwin, who did extremely well to come in the first three after fencing for less than a year. There was a prize for the best stylist, which was won by Caitlin Oldham, (11) another fencer of less than a year’s experience. She was a delight to watch.
It was a good day for Bridport’s youth teams in the Dorset Cup this weekend with all four teams progressing to the next rounds of the competition.

SHIRLEY Parker, chairman and head coach of West Dorset Fencing Club, has just come back from an exciting day at the headquarters of the British Olympic Association.
She attended a special ceremony and, watched by the hierarchy of British Fencing, including Britain’s 2012 two top fencers and medal hopefuls Richard Kruse and Laurence Halstead, she received a British Fencing Association Award of Merit. Parker was one of only four people specially selected for this honour.

Bridport Under 9s starred in a thrilling draw at Bere Regis on Sunday. In a high tempo game, the bees were behind early on but roared back with two super strikes from Michael Bodycombe and Harrison Weeks. As the game went from end to end, the home team stepped up and scored two goals before half time to lead 3-2.
Bridport Leisure Centre is hosting the 2011 Betambeau Awards, which was set up to celebrate the sporting achievements of local youngsters.
The Award commemorates the life of Ronald Betambeau, a local sportsperson who swam and played water polo between the two piers of the old harbour. His legacy was the Betambeau Award.
Bridports under 10s travelled to Rossgarth and emerged with 3 valuable points. It is a sign of a good team when they did not play particularly well but emerged with the victory. Isaac House scoring the first goal. Finlay Davy then scored a well worked second and Morgan Napier was unlucky hitting the post twice with headers. Ryan Leader Oscar Tomkins and Manny Cox remained firm at the back with Elliot Crabb putting in some well timed challenges. Bridport led 2-0 at half time but Rossgarth started brightly in the second half. Keeper Grant Rist who did not have much to do in the first half saved several times, and Rossgarth also scored a fortunate goal, but held out for the win.
Meets at the British Legion Hall every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. 7.45pm to 9.30pm.

A round-up of Bridport Youth Football Club’s games:
Bridport started confidently and played some nice football at times. The midfield of Finley Cauldwell, Mannie Wellman ,Harry Cortice and Oliver Hansford-Harvey all linked well together in the midfield creating several good chances with Tom Kilcoyne always a threat up front.
The 2011 Black Buoy Cup Sea Race will take place on Sunday 11th September at 3.45pm from West Beach, West Bay, Bridport. The race is a ‘Bridport mile’ (1200 metres) from a standing start on the beach to a marker buoy and back again. Entrants must be competent swimmers, able to swim 2000 metres (60 lengths) and should be local residents of Bridport and surrounding villages or a member of local Bridport Swimming Clubs. The Minimum age for participants is 14 years of age on the 4th September

West Dorset Fencing Club are having an open day on Saturday 4th June from 2-5pm at the Bridport Leisure Centre. So if you fancy trying your hand at some swordplay do come along, they will be using their new electronic equipment and there will be members from other clubs taking part too.
It was a very exciting night for the members of West Dorset Fencing Club in Bridport last Thursday. With Allan Jay and Bill Hoskyns, our greatest ever British fencers, regularly attending the club sessions, and with Olympic fencer Shirley Parker as founder, chairman and one of the club’s coaches, the fencers in Bridport are accustomed to Olympic celebrities attending their evenings.
This open letter is intended to share a predicament, suggest a course of action and incite some feed back. Put bluntly The Trick Factory in 2010 has lost a lot of money, more than any previous year. I don’t know the exact figure but its around 3K. The reasons for this are lack of support. Either from would be sponsors, contributors or simply people attending the facility, either to use and/or help at the premises.
Classes are sensitively built around Yoga postures combining movement with breath to promote strength, stamina and flexibility. Simple breathing techniques will be introduced to help calm and quieten the mind. These classes are suited to all, as well as to students who have physical issues ie ‘bad backs’ . Michelle is able to modify the postures according to the individual needs of each student.
No racist comments please The famous Black Buoy Swim is a race that is approximately 1200 metres to a marker buoy and back, and has proven to be immensely popular for both participants and spectators.
Taking place at West Bay this Sunday 12th September this will be the 104th year of the race, which dates back to 1907.
Bridport Round Table are the latest local organisation to show their support of Bridport Gig Rowing Club, in a very practical way. Friday evening saw a great turn out from both RT and BGRC members who showed up on the Slipway in West Bay to watch the handing over of a generous donation of essential kit for the club.
Not far from Bridport you will find The Tunnel Target Sports Centre which is proving to be one of the top target shooting facilities in the country, opened in July 2010 and built inside the old Charmouth Tunnel – a Grade 2 listed structure that used to span the A35 trunk road between Charmouth and Axminster until the bypass was built in 1990 it has been transformed into a clean, comfortable and efficient set of shooting ranges with a 25 Metre ground floor range with 4 lanes and the 50 Metre range with 5/6 lanes. There is also a 100 Metre range under construction.
Bridport Gig Rowing Club was established in March 2009 to introduce pilot gig rowing and racing to West Bay. Through hard work and effort we now have our first boat, the training boat Bucky Doo. Bucky Doo was officially launched recently and is already in action most weekends on the waters off West Bay. Bridport Gig Rowing Club members will be found amongst dozens of colourful gigs on East Beach at West Bay 11am – 2pm Sunday 25 April. Anyone interested in finding out about gig rowing and how to join this community project as a competitive rower, social rower or as part of the critical support and refreshments team will be very welcome.
