Talk by human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith, founder of Reprieve, who represents inmates of Guantanamo Bay and death row. Entry by donations (£5) split between Reprieve and talk organisers the Bridport Peace & Justice Group, to defray costs.Well-known international human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith is to speak in Bridport this Saturday.
Mr Stafford Smith represents, among others, former Guantanamo Bay captive Binyam Mohammed. He has also recently suggested that former Guatanamo inmates should be welcomed to Bridport.
He said: “I think we should welcome them to Bridport. If you want to make Bridport the safest place in Europe you would show that you mean what your principles say they mean, which is to stand up for justice – then you would never be a victim of Islamic extremists because they recognise the people of Bridport were not hypocrites.”
Mr Stafford Smith is the founder of the charity Reprieve and has spent
25 years working on behalf of defendants facing the death penalty in the USA. Since 2004, he has focused on achieving due process for the prisoners being held by the US in Guantánamo Bay.
We are hoping to hear from Clive on the new US president, the history and future of Guantanamo Bay, the 'black prisons' and the subject of human rights and the War on Terror.
